3 Proven Ways to Stop Negative Thoughts

Have you ever heard this phrase: “If someone calls you pretty, you remember it for a day. If someone calls you ugly, you remember it forever”. Why is that we human beings tend to fixate on negative thoughts and emotions? How to stop negative thoughts from entering into your mind?

You know that you don’t want to think about the negative things, and you really want to stop doing that, but yet somehow you just can’t do it. What can you do about this? How to overcome this?

Today I will share with you 3 proven ways that will help you to get unstuck from negativity, and most importantly, to fill your mind with positivity.

Why Do We Fixate On Negative Thoughts?

First and foremost, you should understand the reason why we human beings tend to fixate on negative thoughts.

It is because of the survival mechanism of the human brain. Its main purpose is not to make you happy, but to make you survive. And to do so, your brain mainly focuses on the dangerous/bad things, which is the main safeguard mechanism of your brain.

That’s why we prioritize negative thoughts over the positive ones because the positive things are nice and are not so critical for your life; i.e. they are not threatening your life, therefore your brain ‘ignores’ them.

That’s why it is so hard to get unstuck from negative thoughts and emotions.

To overcome this, you can use other functionalities of your brain that you can use to your advantage.

1) Set A Goal      

Let me explain this tip with a quote:

I don’t care what you think about me. I don’t think about you at all” - Coco Chanel, a French fashion designer, and businesswoman.

Set A Goal

She formulated this crystal clear idea that instead of trying to fight with somebody or to think about how you can get rid of something, it is much easier to shift your perspective and to change your focus.

Because that uses another property of your brain – you can think about only one thing at a time.

It might be hard to do, but you can shift your focus – you can do so by setting a goal.

What is the major goal that you believe will help you to enlighten your life if achieved? Think about it, write it down, and then focus your energy and thoughts on this goal.

Instead of having negative thoughts, because of which you serve people who hate you or did something bad to you, you rather serve your goal with the time and energy that you have.

2) Start Learning

This is of my favourite analogies:

How can you fight with darkness in a room? There is no way, but you can turn on the light!

Similarly, how can you fight negative emotions/thoughts? There is no way to pick them and throw them away from your brain. But you can fill in your brain with more positive thoughts, something that will be helpful.

Start Learning

 

And that’s exactly what learning can give you!

Find subjects that interest you, that are useful to you, start learning them, and you will naturally develop positive thoughts and new ideas.

3) Exercise

Physical exercise is another important biological thing that you need to consider. Naturally, we have a ‘fight or flight’ reaction to stress.

You need to act! And if you cannot do that, you start feeling all these emotions going inside of you, and there is no way for them to go out. And unfortunately, they start destroying you from the inside, and they even provoke sickness.

To avoid this, you just have to do some physical work. You need to use that energy to do some physical labour. And the great way to do that is, of course, to exercise.

Exercise

When you exercise, you find a way to use that energy (even the negative energy) for a positive thing, for example, to build your body.

Additionally, when you exercise, your body produces hormones that make your mood better. That’s another natural way of bringing yourself into your positive state of mind.

These were the 3 easy tips to follow to get unstuck from the negative thoughts. Instead of trying to combat against them and to stop negative thoughts, you take a different approach – you shift our thoughts to your goals, to your learning, to exercise.

Therefore, you use the same energy in doing something useful, positive, productive, and to fill in your brain with positivity so that there is no space left for the negative thoughts.
