Empathy – The Most Valuable Skill To Boost Your Confidence In The 21st Century

What is empathy?

The ability to understand the feelings and perspectives of others and use that understanding to guide one’s actions.

In today’s fast changing world, empathy is more than just a moral compass. It plays an essential role in one’s ability to be innovative and flexible. To solve many of today’s problems, we need to work in team, collaborate, think creatively and understand multiple perspectives. In such a scenario, empathy is not just a value, but actually an essential skill!

In order to boost your self-confidence, you must strive to develop empathy as a skill.

Why is Empathy important?

  1. It allows us to collaborate with diverse groups of people.
  2. If we empathetically understand one’s problem, we are better positioned to find solutions and drive changes.
  3. If we can empathetically listen to others, not only do we make better decisions but we also become better leaders who have the capacity to inspire others.

Empathy and well-being

Mutual empathy has huge consequences on our well-being and self-esteem.

A basic human need is – the need to be seen, heard and recognized. Mutual Empathy fulfils this need.

When others care about how we feel, our emotions and our needs, we instantly feel energised and better – it is a natural medicine.

Empathy and Leadership

In today’s world, it is no more possible for leaders to order things to get done. On the contrary, they have to inspire others to do it. The ability to inspire comes from the ability to be empathetic. If you can understand what ticks the other person and what does not, you can tailor your behaviour and communication such that it is conducive to the situation.

Finally, in your leadership capacity, there is one big role of empathy – ‘The Difference between Confidence and Arrogance is Empathy.’

So, how do you get Empathy?

Only when you give Empathy, will you get empathy in return. Lead by personal example and inspire people with your genuine kindness. You will definitely get the same, if not more in return.
