Building The Courage To Achieve Success

There are several instances and examples where having courage and confidence can help open doors and achieve success.

Here is the good news – you too can build your courage by taking the simple steps listed in this article.

Video Transcript and 8 More Tips

Everyone wishes to live a happy and prosperous life. However, very few lucky fellows actually get to realise their dreams.

So, what is it that differentiates these successful people from the rest?

“Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.”
- George Addair

1. Admit problems

At one point in time, I realised that I am watching more TV than I ever did. For a while, I convinced myself “there is nothing wrong”, “everybody watches TV” etc.

But at some point, I just had to admit to myself that I am binge watching TV only to avoid the stress of work and indulge in something more comfortable.

Right after this, I printed a motivational quote and stuck that sheet of paper on the centre of the TV. So every time I felt tempted to turn the TV on, the motivational quote pushed me to keep working.

Usually, we are reluctant to admit our problems because it may make us feel “I’m not good enough”.

The best tip here is – detach. Remind yourself that your problems do not define who you are. Your attitude and behaviour can always be changed.

Your problem is just an obstacle. You need to overcome it to become stronger and more successful.

2. Embrace Challenges

Here is a story –

In 2007, Maria went to Bali for a short business trip. During this trip, all of her savings - $11,000 was stolen from her credit card.

Desperate for money, she started looking for ways to earn some. This resulted in her starting a business. In the same year, she earned almost $100,000, making around 10 times more than what she had lost.

Today, Maria says she is thankful for the thieves – without them she would have never pushed herself to start her own business.

It is natural for us to hope that problems will not come our way. However, in reality, life gives you challenges to push you to become a stronger self – so that later on, you can enjoy the rewards that lie on the other side of fear.

3. Seek for Advice and Help

About 10 years ago, I started my online business. During this time, I made arguably one of the best decisions of my life – I hired a business coach. Even though it costed me a lot of money, it helped me tremendously.

Around a year later, I decided that I didn't require the coach any more. I thought that I’d learnt all the tricks and traits!

This turned out to be the single silliest decision I’ve ever made. Sure enough, next year, my business stagnated and I probably lost about 6-figures income during that time.

This was the reward for my arrogance!

It is easy to show off and pretend like you are on top of your things.

On the contrary, it takes a lot of courage to practice humility and ask for help. This way, however, you get massive rewards!

4. Face the Situations You Avoid

There may be several situations that make you feel shy and uncomfortable – this is what social anxiety is. Many people suffer the same.

Such uncomfortable instances can be anything – unpleasant colleague or even an arrogant boss.

During such instances, it is tempting to avoid the situation. That is human nature.

But here is the tough truth – you cannot achieve success by avoiding and fearing challenging situations.

So what do you do?

  1. Recognise that 99% of your fears don't actually come true in real life. Even if they do happen, the consequences are usually less disastrous than you expect it to be.
  2. Remind yourself that your fears are not real. It is just a story that your brain keeps telling you. In reality, in the modern world there is no danger to your life in the vast majority of situations.
  3. Shift your focus to the solution and the desired outcome.

5.Think Big

Most people do not achieve big things in life because they don't seriously consider setting big goals.

High goals may seem too ambitious to achieve.

However, remember how you were as a child?

You probably had dreams and goals that had no limits or boundaries. At that time, you let your imagination run wild. You probably did not shy away from imagining yourself as the next president or a world famous fighter jet pilot.

From time to time, it is important to go to such mind-sets.

While it is important to set realistic short-term goals, it is critical to have ambitious long term goals.

“If you're going to be thinking, you may as well think big.”
- Donald Trump

6. Embrace the Risk of Failure

“Every master failed more times than the student has tried.”

People usually don't set high goals for themselves because they are too scared of the high failure risk that is associated with high goals.

However, the truth is, you only fail when you stop trying. If you continue, failure is only a passing parcel in your quest for success. That is, failure is merely ‘success in progress.’

Every so often, we through away opportunities, fearing the possibility of failure. In situations such as this, remind yourselves of the following quote – “Every master has failed more times than the student has even tried.”

7. Not Making Mistakes Is the Biggest Mistake

When you were in school, you were probably taught that making mistakes is bad – it is something you should avoid.

However, in real life, it is the opposite of this. In reality, successful people are risk takers. They take big actions to achieve their dreams, which means that, along the way, they may encounter failures and problems. This does not stop them.

The truth is – there is nothing wrong in making mistakes. Everybody makes them.

Know that mistakes and failures give you an opportunity to make it better next time.

8. Take Full Responsibility for Everything in Your Life.

The majority of adults still blame their parents for “not raising them the right way.”

It could very well be true that your relatives played a huge part in forming your values, beliefs and habits. However, just remember that the past is over. You now have full control over your present self.

“Don’t blackmail your present to ruin your beautiful future.”

The key to personal power is to understand that you have a sense of agency – take full responsibility of your life.

It takes a lot of effort and courage to live without complaining and blaming.

Jim Rohn’s words capture this perfectly,

“If you don’t like how things are, change it – you’re not a tree!”

9. Commit Fully

There is a German proverb - “Wenn Schon, Denn Schon”. This means – “If you decide to do something, then do it well.” Go all out!

This may seem obvious. But let’s be honest – we are much more comfortable playing it safe.

The below comment from James describes it very well:

It’s critical to build your self-confidence. It liberates you to pursue your dreams, no matter what anyone else thinks.

Then you can commit to your goals fully, without trying to build an escape path. This will maximize your chances for success.

10. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

It is comfortable to do things that are in the scope of our routine. Almost anything that goes beyond the everyday operations, may make you feel insecure and out of place.

This is exactly why the “comfort zone” imprisons people. There is no other way to success other than taking novel actions, roads and doors. It may make you feel insecure, but there is just no way around it.

11. Be Yourself.

Finally, develop the courage to be yourself. No one perfect, therefore, there is no shame in being imperfect.

We are social beings. Thus, it is natural to adapt our behaviour such that we are liked by others. But there is an inherent flaw with this – we compromise on ourselves. Remember, you were born to walk your own path.

“Always be a first rate version of yourself and not a second rate version of someone else.”

― Judy Garland
