3 Ways To Make Daily Positive Affirmations Work for You

So how to make daily positive affirmations work? Let me start by asking you a question.

People usually think that money can solve all problems. Is this true?

 

Well. No.

In fact, 70% of lottery winners end up being broke within a few years. Isn’t this surprising?

Financial experts have a few justifications for this:

  • If one has a sudden windfall of money, his close friends and family usually tend to expect a part of it (possibly to sort out their own issues). Indeed, it can be very hard to say “no” to close ones.

    "Once family and friends learn of the windfall, they have expectations of what they should be entitled to, and many of these expectations are not rational."

  • When one’s economic status suddenly improves, they may be prone to spending it carelessly on luxury items that they once could never think of affording.
  • Lottery winner rarely asks for professional financial advice – only because they never really needed to before. Since they don't have experience in hiring financial experts, even if they do hire one, they are usually unable to find a perfect match.

Research has shown that lottery winners are more likely to declare bankruptcy (within 3-5 years) than the average American!

Therefore, money is not a one-fit solution for all problems. In fact, as we just saw, a sudden influx of money may even have a negative impact on your life.

At times, when people don't feel comfortable in their own skin, they opt for plastic surgery to feel more “beautiful.” What's interesting here is that even though their body was transformed, most of these patients claimed they still did not “feel” beautiful.

So what does this mean?

The moral of these researches is perfectly captured by Buddha’s words -

“We are shaped by our thoughts;
we become what we think.”

Modern day science to confirms this.
Everything starts within. Only when your inner mind changes, will you be able to see changes in the outside world. You have to envision the changes in order for it to translate into reality.

By the age of 5, 90% of brain development, 50% of all learning and 100% self-esteem formation are complete. That is why, it is very hard to drastically change your ideas, personality, and habits.

However, nothing is impossible.
You just need to learn to re-program the old algorithms and formulas that your brain knows.

To do this, a lot of gurus suggest the use of ‘daily affirmations.’ What does this mean?

It simply means that you tell yourself positive things. For example, “I am beautiful,” “I am capable of making more money” etc.

But, there is an inherent problem with this. When you lie to yourself, there is no way you can fully buy into what you are telling yourself.

In fact, there was an interesting experiment related to this –

2 groups of people: 1 group that was high on confidence and 1 that was low on the same. Both groups were asked to repeat the following affirmation multiple times – “I am confident.”

The study concluded that Group 1 (that was already high on confidence) felt really good about this exercise, whereas, Group 2 (that was low on confidence) felt worse after the exercise. This was because lying to themselves created an uncomfortable dissonance, thereby making them feel guilty and conscious.

So, how do you make affirmations work?!

 

Here are 3 formulas to make daily positive affirmations work:

⦁ Use the word “more.”

For example, you can say “every day I will look ‘more’ beautiful or become ‘more’ wealthy” etc.

Such an affirmation will prime your brain to believe that you are already beautiful, and you are only striving for “more.”

You can clearly see how this is better than telling yourself “I am a millionaire” when you evidently not. Similarly, when you say “I want to be a millionaire,” you are again reminding your brain that you aren’t one.

⦁ Fake it till you make it.

Acting as though you are already the person you want to be can trick your brain into taking actions that will take you closer to your “idea” self.

For example, instead of saying to yourself, “I am fit and beautiful,” you can simply act the part.

Ask yourself, “how would a fit athlete act?”

You will find answers such as:

  • Eat healthy food.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Exercise regularly.

Now all you’ll have to do is act the part and follow the same actions. This will naturally push you towards being the kind of person you want d to be.

⦁ Use the phrase “I feel like_____.”

For example, you can say “I feel like a champion.” This subconsciously primes your brain into feeling like you are a champion.

When you start “feeling” like something, you tend to alter your thoughts and behavior to be in congruence with the “feeling.”

What do you do next?

  • Identify a problem you want to solve or a goal you want to achieve.
  • Identify a problem you want to solve or a goal you want to achieve.
  • Use all or any of the above tactics.

Don't forget the power of repetition. Just like rote learning, initially, you need to rehearse the daily positive affirmations until it becomes natural to you.
