Will I be rich? Do I have what it takes to be successful?
There were a lot of researches that studied these questions.
In this article, you will learn 13 main traits of highly successful people. If YOU have similar characteristics, then success will surely come your way.
SIGN#1: You Turn Your Ideas Into Actions QUICKLY
SIGN #2: You Have A Good Attitude To People
Numerous researchers have confirmed that networking is critical to your professional success.
A study of lawyers at a large North American law firm, found that their success depended on their ability to network effectively both internally (to get themselves assigned to choice clients) as well as externally (to bring business into the firm).
How do we develop strong networking skills?
The key is to have a good attitude towards people.
Originally, people are self-centered and only think about their own interests. And, you are literally judged by how much benefit you bring to them.
- If you dislike others, they will dislike you in return.
- If you like others, they will like you.
Although this sounds overly simplistic, it is still true!
Here is another story from my experience -
Recently, I had visited a fabric shop.
As soon as I entered the shop, a girl walks up to me and offers a cup of tea for free.
This is, in fact, a marketing strategy - these marketers know that if they give something to me - I am much more likely to give something back to them, later on.
Yes. This is absolutely true. It’s a proven fact!
Just to sum it all up - if you wish to have lots of people supporting you, you must have a good attitude towards them as well.
If you already do this, then you are definitely on your way to success!
SIGN #3: You Admire Rich People And Wish To Become One Too
The topic of our attitude towards money is quite tricky.
On the one hand, we all want to lead a wealthy life. On the other hand, it is also true that modern society has become overly obsessed with money.
After all, a person’s value is NOT evaluated by money alone!
- You’re a valuable member of your family.
- A Valuable Friend.
- A Valuable Member Of Society.
- A Valuable Human Being.
Therefore, money shouldn’t be a goal by itself. Rather, money should be a reward that you get after achieving your self-fulfilled goal.
There’s also another thing to think about here -
Often, media portrays rich people in a negative light. Hence, it’s easy to become sceptical about them.
For example, here’s a comment one person posted about how to get rich.
It is natural to adopt this kind of skepticism and it is also true to some extent.
However, if you hate rich people, you’ll never become one.
If you set a goal to become rich, somewhere deep inside you know that this task is very hard to achieve.
And so you’re supposed to be unhappy all those years until you’re there. It’s not the situation you’d want to be in and therefore some people start to adopt defense mechanisms and say -
- “Money doesn’t buy you happiness.”
- “I don’t need to have so much money I need just enough to cover the bills and to have a happy time with my friends and family.”
If you take this kind of defensive approach, it may let you feel good for the moment. But guess what - it won’t help you get rich.
So how do we deal with this conflict of interest?
The famous motivational author and speaker Jim Rohn have very well summarized it below–
With this approach, you can be grateful for what you have now and be happy every moment of your life.
SIGN#4: You Have Written Goals
SIGN#5: You’re A Realistic Optimist
Nowadays, positive psychology is very popular.
You must have stumbled upon several quotes such as:
For example, many young entrepreneurs have unrealistic mission statements for their start-up:
- “We are going to reach a million customers…”
- “We are going to raise a billion dollars!”
The above statements are usually far from what we really can achieve.
Therefore, I urge you to be a Realistic Optimist. ☺
It is good to be optimistic. At the same time, it is important for you to do your homework - study the market, study the situation, study the facts and be aware of the reality.
Let’s see what a real-world business practitioner says -
As you can see, Branson doesn't give you a false sense of optimism. Not everything will be positive. There will definitely be ups and downs. But it is still possible.
So what does it mean to be a realistic optimist?
It means that:
- You’ve done your homework (research). You are aware of the facts and reality.
- You see that there are pros and cons of your idea.
- In such a situation of uncertainty, you say “Yes”.
The below quote illustrates the attitude of a realistic optimist.
"If you are going through hell, don't stop, keep moving"
If you follow the above steps, then you are taking calculated risks. You are better prepared to face the hardships and persist till you achieve your rewards and goals in the end.
SIGN#6: You Love To KISS
KISS, a principle created by the U.S. Navy in 1960, which is an acronym for "Keep It Simple, Stupid.”
This is a gentle reminder to you to not complicate matters and instead find simple ways to do the things.
Nowadays, you can find lots of tips for productivity and time management. They mostly encourage you to be more productive and accomplish more (and more and more) tasks.
Let’s look at this from another angle - doing lots of hard work doesn’t necessarily guarantee good results.
In fact, have a look at this story -
Amazon warehouse workers are discouraged from sitting down during their 10-hour shift. They are required to pick an item for packing every 30 seconds and have their “units per hour” constantly displayed on a screen in front of them.
The warehouse workers are unable to handle the strain of the punishing quotas and are taken away by ambulances regularly.
As you’ve probably noticed, these are quite deplorable conditions.
Yet these people receive average wages.
On the contrary, Jeff Bezos (the founder of Amazon) recently became the world’s richest person with a net worth of $105.1 billion!
Does this mean that Jeff Bezos works harder than the employees of Amazon Warehouse?
So what’s the difference?!
Rich people don’t work MORE, but
work on MORE IMPORTANT tasks.
This means that instead of doing more number of tasks, you need to focus on fewer tasks, ones that are of higher quality and cancel or delegate the remaining tasks.
This will help in making your life simpler and more productive!
SIGN#7: You Stay Focused On Your Priorities.
There was a dinner party in 2016, where Bill Gates and Warren Buffet were speaking to Bill Gates’ father.
At some point, a gentleman approached the group of people and said, “Sorry for disturbing you. Obviously, you are one of the most successful people of our time. Could you please tell me what the secret to success is?”
The group of people replied, “It is the focus!”
You have to know what you want, and you have to stay focused.
Nowadays, we are faced with so many distractions. It is so easy to lose yourself to many things. However, one thing that successful people do differently, is that they stay focused on their goals and what is important to them.
SIGN#8: You Are Ambitious
There was an extensive study by Harvard University about the psychology of successful people. It found that the number 1 quality of success was ‘the hunger’ for success – in other words, ambition!
Think about any successful person you know. You will find that he or she is always hungry for success and progress. They never settle.
In fact, think about Donald Trump. Put aside his political views, and analyze his life. In 2016 he was 70 years old and was worth $3 billion. A lot of people at that situation would prefer to have a relaxed life.
On the other hand, Trump strived to have a political life, even though it is a highly stressful one. This is because successful people never settle. They always strive to achieve more.
9. You Value Your Time A Lot
Time is money. You can earn more money, but you can never earn more time. Sounds clichéd? Well, it’s still true.
Successful people really live by this statement. They don't waste time. Instead, they consciously decide where to spend their time.
My brother, a TV journalist, once had to interview a very successful entrepreneur. The entrepreneur asked for the interview to begin at 3:23 PM and finish at 3:30 PM. He did not allocate more than 7 minutes to this activity. That is how strict he was with his time!
“You can ask me for anything you like, except time.”
– Napoléon Bonaparte, Emperor of the French
SIGN#10: You Have A Vision For The Kind Of Life You Wish To Live
It is impossible to hit a target that you don't see. Successful people envision their preferred future – their dream!
One famous example of this – is Jim Carrey. In the beginning of his career, he used to drive up to Hollywood hill and dream of becoming a world famous entertainer and actor. He even wrote to himself a check worth $10 million for acting services; he used to carry this dummy check in his pocket just as a reminder of what he wanted to become.
There is nothing wrong in dreaming, as long as you supplement this dream with actions which will turn them into reality.
“The people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones who do.” – Steve Jobs
SIGN#11: You Hate Mediocrity
Do you usually take notice of people who are leading a mediocre and unhappy life? Do you see that they are stuck? Do you feel like they have the potential to lead their life a lot better?
If you have thoughts such as this, it is clear that you are on your way to success.
“Think different.” – a motto of Apple Company.
"Today I will do what others won't so tomorrow I can do what others can’t.” — Jerry Rice (one of the most famous football players of all times)
SIGN#12: You Do Not Buy Things To Impress Friends
Nowadays, we tend to buy a lot of fancy gadgets and cool things, just to show-off to our peers and be at par with them. Doing so, forces us to spend a lot of money; making it very tough for us to have savings that we can actually invest in ourselves and our futures.
Instead follow the approach that rich people take.
A book called ‘The Millionaire next door’ by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko, studied a lot of American millionaires. They found a common trait – most successful people under-consumed materialistic things.
They did not spend quite as much as they could afford. In fact, a lot of the times, their neighbours had no clue that these guys were millionaires.
SIGN#13: You Are A Lifelong Learner
“To earn more, you must learn more.” — Brian Tracy (famous motivational speaker)
Successful people are obsessive learners. They seize every opportunity to learn new things and hone their skills.
Donald Trump was once asked to tell his secret to success in 1 word. He replied, - ‘Knowledge.’
Another famous politician, Theodore Roosevelt (26th President of the USA), was famous for being able to hold a conversation with just about anybody.
The reason why he managed to be such a charismatic person was because he was an avid reader. Even when he was the president, he used to read a book every day before breakfast.
If you are a lifelong learner, it ensures that you will always keep moving forward.
“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” – Henry Ford
